Learning to Plan Less Around Your Brace
During the first days of bracing, it can feel like every decision involves your brace.
What are my brace hours today?
When can I take it off?
What should I wear?
Will this be comfortable?
Do I need to bring anything with me?
The brace seems connected to everything.
That is completely normal during the beginning.
You're learning.
You're adjusting.
You're trying to figure out how treatment fits into your life.
The good news is that this usually changes.
As the first month goes on, many routines become automatic.
You stop having to think through every little detail.
You know what clothes work well.
You know what your daily schedule looks like.
You know what helps you feel comfortable.
Instead of constantly planning around your brace, your brace starts fitting into your plans.
That may sound like a small difference.
It isn't.
It's a huge milestone.
It means the brace is becoming part of your routine instead of the center of your routine.
You start spending less mental energy managing treatment.
That leaves more room for everything else.
School.
Friends.
Activities.
Life.
Many teens don't notice this shift right away.
It happens gradually.
One day you simply realize you went several hours without thinking about your brace schedule.
You were busy living your life.
And that's exactly what should happen.
Treatment is important.
But treatment should not be the only thing happening in your life.
The more experience you gain, the easier it becomes to focus on the things you enjoy instead of constantly focusing on your brace.
That doesn't mean you're taking treatment less seriously.
It means you're becoming more comfortable with it.
And that is one of the clearest signs that you're adjusting.
