One Year From Now
Right now, scoliosis might feel like the biggest thing in your life.
It may be the first thing you think about when you wake up and one of the last things you think about before you fall asleep.
You think about appointments.
You think about your curve.
You think about treatment.
You think about what might happen next.
You think about things you wish you didn't have to think about at all.
When something is new and scary, it can feel like it will always take up this much space in your mind.
But what if we looked ahead?
Not ten years.
Not five years.
Just one year.
Imagine yourself one year from now.
Think back to who you were before diagnosis.
Could that version of you have imagined handling everything you're dealing with today?
Probably not.
Yet here you are.
Learning.
Adapting.
Growing.
Doing things you never expected you'd have to do.
The same thing will likely happen over the next year.
Future you will know things that current you doesn't know yet.
Future you will have experiences you haven't had yet.
Future you will have survived challenges you haven't faced yet.
Future you will be stronger than you are today.
Not because life will suddenly become perfect.
Because growth happens through experience.
Right now, you may be focused on questions.
One year from now, you may have answers.
Right now, you may feel uncertain.
One year from now, many things that seem overwhelming today may feel routine.
Right now, you may feel like you're figuring everything out.
One year from now, you'll have a year of experience behind you.
That's a powerful thing.
Think about the first week after diagnosis.
You probably knew very little about scoliosis.
Everything felt unfamiliar.
The terminology.
The appointments.
The treatment options.
The emotions.
Now compare that version of yourself to who you are today.
Even if only a few weeks or months have passed, you've already learned a lot.
You've already adapted.
You've already grown.
Growth often happens so gradually that we don't notice it.
That's why looking ahead can be helpful.
Because it reminds us that the version of ourselves we are today is not the version we'll always be.
One year from now, you may still have scoliosis.
You may still be in treatment.
You may still have appointments.
But chances are, you won't feel exactly the way you feel today.
The fears that feel huge right now may become much smaller.
The questions that keep you awake at night may no longer seem so scary.
The uncertainty that feels overwhelming today may become manageable.
Not because everything changes.
Because you change.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming that growth only happens when circumstances improve.
But often growth happens even when circumstances stay the same.
You become more confident.
More resilient.
More knowledgeable.
More capable.
More experienced.
And those changes matter.
Imagine meeting your future self one year from now.
What would that version of you want current you to know?
They would probably tell you to stop being so hard on yourself.
They would probably remind you that you don't need all the answers right now.
They would probably tell you that many of the things you're worried about never become the giant problems you imagine.
They would probably remind you that you're stronger than you think.
Most importantly, they would probably tell you that you make it through.
Not because every day is easy.
Not because every fear disappears.
But because you keep going.
That's what future you already knows.
The future version of you has already survived the things you're worried about today.
They've already gotten through the appointments.
They've already faced the challenges.
They've already learned the lessons.
And if they could send a message back through time, it might sound something like this:
"You don't need to be so afraid."
"You don't have to have everything figured out."
"You are stronger than you realize."
"You are going to be okay."
One year is a long time.
A lot can happen in a year.
Friendships can grow.
Confidence can grow.
Knowledge can grow.
Strength can grow.
You can grow.
That's why it's important not to judge your entire future based on how you feel today.
Today is one day.
One chapter.
One moment in a much bigger story.
The person you're becoming is still being written.
And chances are, one year from now, you'll look back at this version of yourself with compassion.
You'll see how scared you were.
You'll see how much uncertainty you carried.
And you'll also see something else.
You'll see how brave you were.
You'll see how hard you tried.
You'll see how much you've grown.
You'll see that you kept moving forward even when you didn't know exactly where the road was leading.
And that's something worth being proud of.
So whenever today feels overwhelming, remember this:
One year from now, you won't be the same person you are today.
You'll be stronger.
Wiser.
More experienced.
More confident.
And you'll have proof that you can handle far more than you once believed.
The future version of you is already cheering you on.
All you have to do is keep taking the next step.
