What If I Feel Different From Everyone Else?

There are moments when scoliosis can make you feel like you're standing slightly outside the crowd.

Not because anyone pushed you there.

Not because you don't belong.

Just because you're dealing with something that many people around you don't fully understand.

That feeling can be uncomfortable.

It can make you wonder why this had to happen to you.

It can make you look around and think everyone else has it easier.

The truth is that almost everyone feels different sometimes.

The reasons are just different.

One person feels different because of scoliosis.

Another feels different because of anxiety.

Another because of a medical condition.

Another because of family problems.

Another because of something nobody else can see.

Feeling different is one of the most human experiences there is.

The challenge is that when you focus only on the thing that makes you feel different, you start overlooking all the things that connect you to other people.

You still have things in common with your friends.

You still share experiences.

You still belong.

You still matter.

You are not standing outside of life looking in.

You are right in the middle of it.

One of the most helpful things you can remember is that differences are not defects.

They are simply part of being human.

If everyone were exactly the same, the world would be a pretty boring place.

Your experiences have shaped you.

They have taught you things.

They have helped you grow.

That doesn't mean you have to be grateful for every challenge.

It simply means that your differences do not reduce your value.

You don't have to become someone else to fit in.

You don't have to hide parts of yourself to belong.

You already belong.

Exactly as you are.
