The Mental Side of Scoliosis Matters Too

When most people hear the word scoliosis, they think about the spine.

They think about curves.

They think about X-rays.

They think about doctor's appointments.

What they don't always think about is mental health.

But mental health matters too.

A lot.

Scoliosis doesn't only affect your back.

It can affect your thoughts.

Your confidence.

Your emotions.

The way you see yourself.

The way you think about your future.

For some teens, the diagnosis feels overwhelming at first.

For others, it feels frustrating.

For others, it feels confusing.

There is no right way to feel.

Every person's experience is different.

One thing that is important to remember is that your feelings are not a problem that needs to be fixed.

They are information.

If you feel sad, there is usually a reason.

If you feel worried, there is usually a reason.

If you feel frustrated, there is usually a reason.

Instead of judging yourself for those emotions, try listening to them.

Ask yourself what you need.

Maybe you need support.

Maybe you need reassurance.

Maybe you need a break from thinking about scoliosis for a while.

Maybe you simply need someone to listen.

Many teens spend so much time focusing on the medical side of scoliosis that they forget to take care of the emotional side.

Both deserve attention.

Both deserve support.

Both deserve compassion.

You do not have to wait until things become overwhelming to ask for help.

You do not have to handle every emotion by yourself.

Mental health support is not only for people in crisis.

It is for anyone who wants help navigating something difficult.

The truth is simple.

Scoliosis affects more than the spine.

And taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of the rest of you.
